Online Degree Programs: How To Balance Family And School

Raising a family and earning a college degree are both tough things to do on their own, let alone trying to juggle both at the same time. There really aren't any ground rules or one right way to do either one, but with a little extra planning and preparation on your part, it is possible to do both.

Set Rules

Opening up all lines of communication and setting some ground rules, first and foremost, will let all parties involved to know what to expect, when you will be available and when you need time to study. Explain to everyone what your quiet time or study time really means and why it is important that you have to do it. That way when you are "unavailable" the family knows why and they are more likely to support you and not resent the fact that you are not around. On the other hand, when it is family time or date night, make sure you are fully involved by giving your family your undivided attention that they deserve.

The great thing about attending a virtual campus is the flexibility online classes offer persons with families. A family calendar that can be posted where everyone can see it is an excellent way to let to the whole family know what your schedule will be from week to week. Designate plenty of time for studying as well as family or fun time. Both will be equally important so you don't fall behind on your studies and for your overall wellbeing.

Get the Family Involved

Having Mom or Dad in school could be the perfect opportunity to be an example to your kids, if they are of school age too.

• Setting aside some time after school to study together shows your children the importance of studying and the discipline it requires to keep up with their studies and to earn good grades

• Make it a special time by serving nutritious treats or fruit smoothies while studying. This way you get to spend time with your kids and get to keep up with your course work at the same time—a win-win situation!

Earning your online college degree doesn't mean you have to do it alone. There are many times when you can get your whole family or spouse involved too. Teaching your family what you are learning is not only is a great refresher for yourself, but chances are they will really enjoy being involved in what you are learning as well.

Making the commitment to go back to school to earn your degree will be challenging at times especially with a family at home and the unexpected things that happen in life.
